Frequently Asked Questions

Performance License

What is a performance license?

A performance license is a fee paid to the author in exchange for permission to perform his work that he owns. Purchasing a license and abiding by the licensing agreement protects the author's work from being stolen or used in a way the author does not approve of.

When do I need a performance license?

You need a license every time you perform one of our titles for an audience of any size. Classroom readings and rehearsals without audience members do not require a license.

Do I need a license if I'm not a professional and not charging admission?

Yes. It doesn't matter if you are professional or amateur or making money off the show or not.

Do I need a license to perform for my family, co-op/school, or church?

Yes. If you have an audience of any size that you have invited to watch the performance, you need to purchase a license.

Do I need a license for each performance or is it a flat fee for any number of performances of the same title?

The licensing fee is determined by how many performances you do of the same title. If you perform once, you pay for one performance. If you perform five times, you will pay for five performances.

Do I purchase a license before or after my performance?

Before. When you are ready to purchase scripts for your actors, go ahead and buy the rights as well.

I need to change the date or time of the performance. Does that affect the license I bought?

For most companies, there would have to be an adjustment to your licensing agreement because two theaters within a certain radius cannot perform the same title at the same time. However, we are currently small potatoes and that's not an issue. You may change your time and date without getting permission from us.

What happens if I have to cancel a performance?

Refunds are available for those who have to cancel a performance and could not reschedule it. Email us at GYATtheater@outlook.com when you need a refund for a cancellation.

May I record my performance or a dress rehearsal?

No. This is a form of duplication of the script that is not currently permitted by the licensing agreement. In the future we may offer a separate recording license, but that is beyond our ability at this moment.

May I share a recorded performance online?

No. The performance license only allows you to perform your show in front of a live audience. Posting any portion of the performance anywhere online or sharing a video file/physical copy of a recorded performance is a violation of the licensing agreement.

May I livestream my performance?

No. In the future we may offer livestream rights, but that is beyond our ability at this moment.

May I take pictures of my performance and share them online?

Absolutely. The actors, costumes, sets--all that is your work that you can be proud to show off. We'd love it if you shared your photos with us on Instagram @gyattheater.

How do I order a performance license?

All of our titles are licensed the same way for the same price. Simply visit the "Shop" tab, select "Performance Rights: All Titles," enter the number of performances you want, and checkout or continue shopping.

Do I have to credit the author or publisher on my promotional materials?

Yes. If you are advertising your show on a poster, flyer, website, social media post, or program, you must include the following credit: "Produced by special arrangement with Get Your Act Together LLC" Please include the author's name under the title of his work.

Scripts

How many scripts do I have to buy?

If you want to read the script before you commit to performing it, you may buy just one script for your own perusal. You need to buy enough scripts so every actor and director has a script. Your perusal script can count toward the number of scripts you need to buy. If you have other staff like stage managers or designers, they will need a script too. Backstage and shop crew members usually don't need a script.

May I photocopy or scan and upload scripts?

No. Duplication of the scripts in any form is stealing from the author.

May actors who live in the same household share scripts?

No. Firstly, this is cheating the author of the full amount do to him. And secondly, it sounds like a better idea than it actually is. It's hard to take notes, highlight, and read from the same script during a rehearsal where you're also both on stage and trying to act. You'll save time and frustration by having one script for each actor.

May I cut, edit, or change the script?

Not without prior permission from the author. We do our best to provide clean scripts that do not require cutting or adjusting language or crude actions. However, if you wish to cut, edit, or change any part of a script for any reason, please contact us at GYATtheater@outlook.com before you order your performance license.

How long does it take to get my changes approved?

It depends on what and how much you want changed. We will do our best to get back to you within 3-5 business days.

Are director's edition scripts only for directors?

The director's scripts were made specifically for directors and stage managers, both of whom usually need extra space for notetaking. Anyone who needs all of the extra features provided in the director's edition scripts may purchase one. They tend to be too big and bulky for actors, which is why a smaller actor's edition is available.

Am I required to buy a director's script?

Nope. It's just an option for those who would enjoy it.

How long does it take for scripts to ship?

We currently print scripts to order, which takes about 3-5 business days. Standard shipping takes about 3-5 business days, so you can expect your scripts to arrive 6-10 business days after you order them.
